I almost returned this because the picture was so dark. After changing the settings repeatedly, I finally got them where the picture is gorgeous! This is what I learned.
Calibrating For Best Picture.
First, turn off the OPC! To me, this function is useless and only produces an abysmally dark picture! Second, under advanced settings, adjust the color temperature to high. Finally, go to the power settings and click on power saving and be sure it is off. Bottom line… this set suffers from the Green Monster. The many energy saving features really hurt the picture brightness.
For the final adjustment, use a THX DVD with the calibration feature on it. After calibrating, the set performs very well. In my case, the Finding Nemo THX DVD was used and now my Pixar films look almost 3D!
Other Considerations.
The remote feels cheap and flimsy. However, it has a fairly good layout. When the lights are off while watching the TV, finding the buttons is not difficult. The buttons have a raised feature that makes finding the right one easier.
The set looks nice in my bedroom. The stand is reinforced with metal, rather than plastic. That is a nice feature.
Sound quality is great! It ranges from very quiet to wall shaking, with fine control. While many use external sound systems, it is nice to have good built-in speakers.
The matte finish dramatically reduces glare compared to my old standard TV. Despite a shiny piano black border, reflections or fingerprints are not a problem. No uneven backlighting or bad pixels have been noticed.
When watching non-widescreen content, the set lets you choose between black sidebars, stretch, or zoom.
Other Considerations.
From research, it seems some sets suffer from dead pixels. Those from the Japanese plant are victim to this. My original TV had 12 dead pixels and had “Manufactured in Japan” on the back. The new one has “Manufactured in Mexico” and has NO dead pixels! Caveat emptor!
